Week 3 Blog

If I had unlimited resources I would research a Reggie Emilia environment(classroom) verses a traditional preschool classroom. The Reggie Emilia approach to learning says that the classroom is the third teacher. Reggie Emilia classroom are natural classroom, everything can be made or it was found outside. The learning is hands-on and parents are required to participate in their child's learning. Since children learn though play why not give them a classroom with real things that they see everyday like leaves, sticks, cd's, umbrella's just to name a few.

Children in a traditional preschool classroom have hands -on experiences, but the things in the classroom are ordered out of catalogs and are not things that they see outside of school. The materials are not life sized like real pot's and pans that go into the kitchen. The classroom is not a natural environment so to speck or a green environment. In the traditional classroom parents are not required to participate and I think that parent participation is key to a child's learning.

  1. LaRoyia,

That would be so great. So many times I have loved to sit in in other schools, environments, even classrooms to get a feel for what it is like outside of my classroom. Having the time and the resources I would say is the hardest part. I would also be very intrigued to see a classroom like that one you describe. It would put a different twist on learning. Thanks for sharing.

  3. Well LaRoyia, reading this has made me want to do research on this! I had no idea that there are schools like this. Sounds like a fun school environment to be apart of. I like the sound of everything being natural and hands on in the classroom. I have gained new insights by reading your post. Thanks

  4. Excellent choice LaRoyia.

I too have heard of Reggie Emelia and it is catching up as a trendy and meaningful way of classroom learning in the upper-middle classes of developing countries like India. I enjoyed seeing the picture you posted, which is more real life like i.e., more haphazard and not catalog organized. It looks like the children are engrossed in an enjoyable art and craft class - just like they would if they were working on or playing with something interesting.

I would also love to learn about the differences between Montessori, Reggie Emelia and traditional methods and I wonder if there are more such approaches than these famous ones.

    Thanks,
    Divya
